SI Day at Anacostia Community Museum

Yesterday was Smithsonian Institution (SI) Day at the Anacostia Community Museum (ACM). The event was implemented in 2007 to increase ACM’s visibility internally within the Smithsonian, which is the world’s largest museum and research complex. The event provides SI employees, interns, and volunteers with an opportunity to visit a museum not located on the National Mall.

While at the museum, attendees enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the Object-based Collection, Library, and the Archives. Treasures on view in the Archives included rare books, Confederate money, early 20th century scrapbooks, slave documents, and photographs.

Highlights featured include a framed image (see below) of Franklin D. Roosevelt from the Evans-Tibbs Collection given to opera singer Madame Lillian Evanti, who performed at the White House in 1934. The plate on the wood reads “This wood was part of the White House roof erected about 1817 and removed in 1927.”
