It was on this day in 1802 that Washington D.C. was first incorporated as a city. Although the Smithsonian operates research centers as far away as Cambridge, Massachusetts and Panama, the majority of our employees (myself included) call the D.C. area home.
The phrase "inside the Beltway" may conjure up images of politicians angrily filibustering one another, but those of us who actually live within the boundaries of I-495 know that this is a city of beautiful flowering trees, wide European-style boulevards, delicious half-smokes, and, ahem, some world-class museums.
To celebrate the District of Columbia's 211th birthday, I will be humming this Magnetic Fields song in my head all day. What's your favorite thing about DC?
